What is sleep dentistry?
For many people, going to the dentist is an anxiety-provoking experience. The team at the Perio & Implant Center of Monterey Bay and the Silicon Valley understands and sympathizes with you if you have dental anxiety.
To accommodate your needs, Dr. Pechak & Dr. Bembey are certified in various levels of sedation ‘Sleep Dentistry’. We even offer an in-house board certified Medical Anesthesiologist. We recommend the best option for you depending on how anxious you are and what work you need to have done.
Dr. Pechak’s top priorities are to take care of your oral health and ease your anxious feelings. The staff is available to answer any of your questions. Our doctors do everything possible to meet your needs, so you’re informed and put at ease.
What types of sedation are used?
Dr. Pechak and his team offer many types of sedation that range from light relaxation to full sleep.
Minimal sedation
This sedation level takes the edge off your anxiety. Examples of minimal sedation include nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and a sedative pill taken just before your appointment. You’re awake and aware of your surroundings during your visit.
Moderate sedation
At this sedation level, you’re able to respond to verbal commands during your treatment, but generally don’t recall the experience. Moderate sedation is available in oral and IV forms.
Deep sedation
Deep sedation, also called general anesthesia, puts you into a deep level of sleep from which you can’t be aroused. General anesthesia is usually reserved for extensive dental work and requires the support of an in house Medical Anesthesiologist .
Dr. Pechak asks that you arrange for someone to drive you to and from your procedure when using any form of sedation.
Is sleep dentistry right for me?
Some people experience no anxiety when visiting the dentist and do just fine with a local anesthetic during procedures like fillings. If you do experience anxiety about seeing the dentist, sleep dentistry is recommended.
Consider sleep dentistry if you have:
- Sensitive teeth
- Strong gag reflex
- Low sensitivity to pain
- Trouble sitting in a chair too long
- Overall dental anxiety
Don’t let your worries about dental work keep you from getting the essential oral health care, including routine cleanings and X-rays, that you need. Call the nearest office of Perio & Implant Center of Monterey Bay and the Silicon Valley or schedule a consultation online.
